Honestly I couldn’t have asked for a better gift around Mother’s day! I won the raffle for 4 tickets to the Bari Koral rock show at SOPAC – the South Orange Performing Arts Center.

Bari Koral is a singer-songwriter from New York. Her specialty is the pop-rock genre, specifically songs for kids. Her latest album, Anna and the Cupcakes was released in 2012 on her own label Loopytunes. She tours extensively through the US with her band playing kids’ shows, fundraisers, parties and private events. Her shows usually go sold out in the city, so Adi and I were pretty excited to attend the show with his friend Aanya and her mom Shimul.

The show began right on the dot at 11am on a Saturday morning at the performance hall in SOPAC. The arena is very spacious, hosting a 415 seat, state of the art live performance hall, with only 12 rows plus 6 in the mezzanine. The seats are so close to the stage that you can make eye contact with the performers! We were seated in the third row on the right, at a comfortable viewing distance.

From the minute the show began till it ended at noon, the energy was infectious. The songs were peppy and light and had  most of the audience, especially childden dancing in their seats or in front of the stage. The band called out for the kids to clap with them, sing the chorus, so the kids were engaged through the entire hour. Adi and Aanya had a blast and were soon in the aisle dancing away!

Once the show was over, the band had a merchandise table where they were selling t-shirts and cds. Our kids were happy to settle for some band stickers and popcorn and we were soon on our way home.

I would definitely recommend Bari Koral for a fun weekend activity for a family with young kids and also checking out SOPAC for your next show!

  1. Thanks for this blog post Anu. I have been intending to take my boys to see a show at SOPAC from a while – you post encourages me to go and get a ticket for the next family event.
